Title: The Twenty-Four Generals of Takeda Shingen, Circa 1850-1900. Silk Painting of Takeda Shingen and His Most Trusted Companions
Condition: Very Good

A Late Edo to Meiji Period, 19th century painting depicting Takeda Shingen, the Tiger of Kai, and his 24 most trusted companions and generals, all labeled by hand. They were just one of many historically famous groupings of battle commanders from Japan's Sengoku Period, with a third of them having perished at the famous Battle of Nagashino in 1575 when they led the Takeda forces against Oda Nobunaga. By the year of 1582, when Shingen’s son Takeda Katsuyori committed seppuku, only three of them were still serving the Takeda or were even alive by that point.

A warlord of the Sengoku Period. Takeda Shingen was one of the most powerful daimyo of the late Sengoku period, despite being based in a poor area with no access to the sea and weak farmlands, leading numerous campaigns, and very nearly stopping the Oda–Tokugawa alliance. Sadly, he died at the age of 51, due to unknown causes, and this led to a chain of events which cumulated in the Takeda Clan’s eventual fall.

The painting has been neatly mounted onto a brocade decorated kakejiku (hanging scroll), with jikusaki (knobs) made of brass. There is a wooden box to accompany it, preserving the scroll.

One silk painting mounted on a kakejiku (hanging scroll), 198 x 72, 124 x 57 main painting

This painting is in very good shape, with minor staining and creasing to the painting. There is some wear to the kakejiku edges.
