Title: The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament and the New, 1750. Finely Bound in Contemporary Morocco with Early Family Register Notes
Author: Church of England
Publisher: Oxon, Printed by Thomas Baskett
Condition: Very Good
A mid 18th century Baskett edition of The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament and the New. Newly translated out of the original tongues, and with the former diligently compared and revised, by his Majesties special command. The Bible has two title pages, the first being nicely engraved in detail.
The Bible seems to have belonged to one Brown family, as there is a family register of inscriptions at the front flyleaf and endpaper, beginning with Henry Francis Brown marrying Jane Cades in 1811, and dates marking the birth of their children, such as Elizabeth Brow in 1814, Anne Brown in 1822, and several other children.
This volume most recently belonged to the library collection of Mulberry House, a former rectory of High Ongar church.
The volume is bound in full contemporary leather, with Cambridge panel gilt tooling and a monogram of ET to both covers.
One finely bound volume in quarto (20.6 x 13.2 cm), A8-Cccc4
This volume is in very good shape, with minor rubbing and wear to the binding, heavier to the hinges, with the upper and lower front hinges starting to split. There is minor foxing and staining throughout.
