Title: The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament and the New, 1712/1713. A Baskett Bible in a Beautiful Contemporary Binding Commissioned and Owned by a Pious Woman, with Silver Fittings and Engravings
Author: Church of England
Publisher: London, Printed for John Baskett, and by the assigns of Thomas Newcomb and Henry Hills
Condition: Very Good
An early 18th century edition of John Baskett’s Holy Bible, containing the Old Testament and the New: newly translated out of the original tongues, and with the former translations diligently compared and revised, by His Majesty's special command.
Rather curiously, the endpapers are full of incomprehensible scribbles in an almost hypnotizing pattern, and I cannot make head nor tails of whether they mean anything.
This volume most recently belonged to the library collection of Mulberry House, a former rectory of High Ongar church.
The volume has been bound in contemporary full leather, with lovely blind stamped decorations and tooling, and there are silver corner fittings and two clasps as well, with the owner’s name engraved into each one, being Mary Raynor. A beautiful binding commissioned for a pious woman.
One finely bound volume in 12mo (15.8 x 9.3 cm), A12-Oo12
This volume is in very good shape, with some rubbing and wear to the binding, largely the spine and hinges. There is some soiling and foxing to the title and last leaf. There is very little foxing or staining otherwise. One quire is jutting out slightly from the text block, but holding firm.
