An exceptionally rare trio of mid 16th century English prayer texts, beginning with the 1566 Jugge imprint of the Book of Common Prayer, beautifully printed in Blackletter, and decorated with numerous historiated woodcut initials.

Bound in and issued alongside it as well is The Psalter or Psalmes of David, also being the Jugge imprint, and similarly decorated, but also with its woodcut bordered title.

These two works have been further enhanced with numerous ink revisions, alterations, annotations, and a few light censors (thankfully leaving the text largely legible). Not only that, but 11 additional leaves on laid paper have been bound in, with various prayers and comments. Judging by the usage of Old English, and the very fine script, the hand likely dates to the very early 17th century. There are some earlier and more contemporary inscriptions to the front flyleaf, with one mentioning King Edward VI.

As a final addition, also bound in is the 1567 Whole Book of Psalms, printed by Thomas Sternhold, beautifully decorated with a woodcut bordered title, and numerous woodcut initials throughout.

The Book of Common Prayer is lacking the first 32 leaves, being the 16 preliminaries and text quires A & B, but they have been supplemented with leaves from the near-matching 1615 edition printed by Robert Barker with the title within a woodcut border printed in red and black. Note that leaves A5-8 of the preliminaries were not supplemented. Leaf Qiii may also be a supplemented example. The Whole Book of Psalmes is lacking the final unnumbered quire of 6 leaves including the index but is otherwise complete.

The volume is still present in the original contemporary calf, albeit with some repairs.

All three works are exceptionally rare, with the first two only recorded in four institutions as per ESTC, and only one of those four being complete, the others being incomplete or with mutilated leaves (ESTC S122916). As for the third text, USTC records similarly, four existing copies in institutions. No other copies have sold at auction within the past 25 years.

Three works finely bound into one volume in folio, 376 of 440 original pages, 204 pages

This volume is in very good shape, with some rubbing and wear to the binding, and a tiny bit of leather flaking. The 1615 BoCP title page is soiled, and a handful of pages have repairs to the margins, with the odd hole or two left untouched, not affecting text. The inner margin of the very last leaf has been restored as well. There is some general soiling throughout.
