Author: Attributed to Otaka Gengo Tadao
Condition: Very Good
An Early Edo Period, 17th to 18th century example of a tanzaku strip of waka poetry, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century.
This example is a rather scarce, but surviving example penned by Otaka Gengo Tadao, a samurai of the Early Edo Period, and a member of the 47 Ronin of Ako in Harima. His family crest was a circle with a triple tortoiseshell pattern and diamond pattern. He was commonly known as Gengo. He also had the pen name Koyo and made a name for himself in haiku poetry.
The tanzaku strip has been nicely decorated, the flowing calligraphy written against a grey background, with a flowering design in the background.
One decorated tanzaku strip on paper, 30.6 x 6 cm
This manuscript is in very good shape, with minor wear and staining to the paper, and a few worm tracks at the bottom, which may have also been repaired at one point.
