Title: Speculum Animae Peccatricis, about 1486-1488. Extremely Scarce and Rubricated edition of this Popular Ascetic Work
Author: Jacobus de Gruytrode
Publisher: Lyon, Guillaume Le Roy, about 1486-1488
Condition: Poor
An extremely scarce late 15th century edition of de Gruytrode Mirror of the Sinful Soul, a highly popular ascetic work.
All early editions are anonymous, and it has been falsely attributed to Dionysius Carthusiensis due to its own claim of having been edited by a Carthusian. The Carthusian is now recognised as either Jacobus de Gruytrode, prior of the Charterhouse of the Twelve Apostles near Liège, or Jacobus de Jüterborg, Carthusian at Erfurt.
The work is neatly rubricated throughout, with quite a few manicules added by a contemporary hand.
Leaves ci-cii, and the last two leaves are lacking
Digital comparison would confirm that this is the Le Roy edition as recorded via USTC 200943, and the scan that can be seen HERE.
USTC records four existing copies of this edition in libraries.
One volume in octavo, 22 of 26 leaves
This volume is in poor shape, with the front cover detached. The text block is mostly broken but still holding by a cord. There is some foxing and staining throughout.
