Title: Shiki kachō-zu zō (Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons), 1805-1848. A Lavishly Painted Emakimono Landscape Handscroll with Vibrantly Colored Birds, Flowers and Nature, Nearly Seven Meters Long
Author: Attributed to Sasaki Senkei
Condition: Very Good
A Late Edo Period, 19th century emakimono handscroll, beautifully hand painted, dubbed Shiki kachō-zu zō, or Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons.
As the name would indicate, this scroll depicts a lavishly painted landscape series of numerous birds, flowers, and trees of all seasons. From cherry blossoms in bloom, to bright red maple trees, countless flowers and more, the nature of this landscape is vibrant in its variety. But it is further enhanced with dozens of birds such as ducks, sparrows, and larger avians such as peacocks and crane, all with their details and plumage brilliantly highlighted.
This scroll has been attributed to the Late Edo Period artist Sasaki Izumikei (1773-1848), with his signature and seals. Born in Kaga, his given name was Moritsugu. He went to Kyoto and studied under Tsuruzawa Tansaku and Tansen. He served the Maeda clan and was appointed as a Hokan. He was also skilled in waka and renga. He died in 1848 at the age of 76.
The paintings have been laid down and bound in a scroll for preservation, with a beautiful brocade decorated cover, and there are jikusaki (knobs). There is a wooden box to accompany it, preserving the scroll.
One brocade decorated emakimono (picture scroll) on paper, 28.5 x 690 cm
This emakimono is in very good shape, with minimal wear or rubbing to the brocade. There are some minor creases and roll marks, with very light paint loss in places, and minor, scattered staining.
