Title: Shameihincho (Sketchbook of Cultural Properties), Circa 1900-1950. A Curious Manuscript with Drawings and Paintings of Artifacts once Shown at an Exhibit, Including an illuminated Icilio Federico Joni Binding
Condition: Very Good

A Meiji to Showa Period, early to mid 20th century manuscript entitled Shameihincho, or a Sketchbook of Cultural Properties.

As the title entails, the manuscript appears to display various objects designated as Japanese Cultural Objects, from Ancient to Early Modern objects, all painted and drawn by an unknown artist. Whether this was produced for the sake of the exhibit, or just a personal production while studying each object is unknown.

From ancient Oshi-e Hina dolls to tattered fragments of Medieval fabrics and more, there are quite a few interesting drawings. But what is most curious is the inclusion of a European object, being a book binding by the notorious forger Icilio Federico Joni. The style is immediately recognizable at a glance, with the many coats of arms and imitation writing, to the gilded icon of Mary.

This collection features sketches of Japanese cultural assets from ancient to medieval times, alongside sketches of Western paintings transmitted from earlier eras. They appear to have been made during the exhibition period. The artist is unknown.

Condition: The cover shows slight fading, the title label has a blemish, and the backing board exhibits slight fading and dullness. The back cover is missing.

One manuscript in orihon format (35 x 24.4 cm), 15 leaves

This manuscript is in very good shape, the rear cover lacking, and minor rubbing to the front cover. There is minor foxing and staining throughout.
