Title: Sermones Thesauri Novi de Tempore, 1484. With a Beautiful, Ornate, Initial
Author: Petrus de Palude
Publisher: Strasbourg (printer of Palude)
Condition: Very Good

A late 15th century second edition of de Palude’s collection of Sermons for the festival days of the liturgical year. Known as the Thesaurus novus in the numerous fifteenth-century editions, this popular collection of sermons became attributed in the fourteenth to the sixteenth century to the French Dominican Petrus de Palude. Twenty-four editions printed from 1483 to 1487 have been attributed to the still unidentified Strassburg press known as the "Printer of the 1483 Vitas Patrum".

The volume has been very sparsely rubricated, with one massive, ornate initial painted in red and dark yellow ink, and three additional pages which have some rubrication. There is some scattered marginalia and annotations, most likely by its 17th century owner.

There are several ownership inscriptions by one Johannes Janorski or Jaworski(?), dated 1620 and 1622, at the foot of the first leaf of the tabula and the first text leaf.

The volume has been bound in modern morroco leather, with blind tooling to both covers.

One blank is lacking.

One finely bound volume in folio, 351 of 352 leaves

This volume is in very good shape, with minimal rubbing or wear to the binding. There is some finger soiling and faint muldew-staining to the margins, and a musty, cellar-like odour. The edges are irregular and slightly frayed at times. There is also minor ink or browning staining scattered throughout. Roughly 30 leaves have been restored with smaller additions or backing missing parts, mostly to the wide margins or at the corners. Leaves c2-3 have a larger added corner tear with some text. Leaf H3 has a large, repaired closing tear. The two lines of the title have been cut out and mounted on paper.
