Title: Scotus Nouissime cum emendatissimo codice parisino castigates, 1497 [Quaestiones in quattuor libros Sententiarum Petri Lombardi]. Volumes I-III of IV. Complete Sets of the Sentences Commentaries Unusually Uncommon in Institutions
Author: Johannes Duns Scotus; Philippus Bagnacavallus; Peter Lombard
Publisher: Venezia, Bonetus Locatellus, for Octavianus Scotus, 18 December
Condition: Very Good
A late 15th century edition of Duns Scotus’ Questions on the Four Books of the Sentences, being his commentary on the original 12th century theological text by Peter Lombard.
This is the first three volumes of four, bound as one volume, though it is common for each part to be individually bound as well. The final volume with the date of imprint is lacking, though Scotus’ woodcut device can be seen at the end of each volume.
There are also notably textually different variations between these 1497 imprints, and the 1503 editions, as well as a collation difference for volume three.
There are numerous woodcut initials throughout, and two woodcut diagrams to volume II.
Though ISTC records quite a few copies of this edition in libraries, complete sets of all four books appear to be a bit more uncommon, with less than half of the 164 recorded copies being noted as complete sets.
The most recent auction hammer for an orphan volume IV of IV of this edition was 1764 Euros in October 2022 at Sotheby’s.
The blanks at the end of each volume have been supplemented with later replacements.
Three books bound into one volume in folio, 138; 84; 68 leaves
This volume is in very good shape, with some wear and scuffing to the binding. There is very little foxing or staining throughout.
