A Late Edo Period, early 19th century manuscript sketchbook, entitled Sansui-cho, or quite literally, Landscapes. As the title would entail, the manuscript is a literati artist’s selection of sumptuous ink wash landscapes.
The sketchbook is a veritable trove of art, with 69 full pages of detailed ink wash drawings, some being double page examples, while in other cases, a single page can have several different illustrations taking up every gap of free space. There are quite a few landscape drawings of snow-capped mountains as well.
One disbound manuscript in folio (28 x 21 cm), 43 leaves and several additional tipped in leaves and drawings
This manuscript’s binding is in poor shape, the binding being detached from the main text block, and some gatherings being undone. There is some scattered staining and worming to the margins, and some of the pages are folded.
