Title: Saint Lawrence. Massive Historiated Initial of the Letter G, Early 16th Century, Italy. Leaf From a Manuscript Antiphonary
Condition: Very Good

A tremendous leaf from a Latin manuscript antiphonary produced on parchment, with a massive historiated initial depicting Saint Lawrence, produced in Italy (possibly the central region), and sometime during the early 16th century.

The letter is painted in a brilliant variety of colors, bordered with gold and blue, and an illuminated halo to Saint Lawrence in the initial. There are lines of text and musical notation to the recto and verso, written in a Gothic script, in black and red ink, and two smaller, but impressively detailed initials to the verso of the leaf. The letter also has a zoomorphic design of a birdlike face and beak.

One illuminated manuscript on parchment, 67.5 x 48 cm, Initial Size of 21.2 x 21.2 cm

This manuscript is in very good shape, with minor wear and creasing to the parchment, and a bit of soiling to the margins. There is an old repair to the right side of the margin, not affecting any text or illumination. A bit of the text is slightly faded.
