Title: Nankin-ga Shukuzu (Nanga Miniature Paintings), Circa 1800-1850 (Late Edo Period). 78 Pages of Ink Wash Landscape Paintings, Being Miniature Copies of Southern School Examples
Author: Student of the Southern School
Condition: Very Good
A Late Edo Period, 19th century manuscript entitled Nankin-ga Shukuzu, or when roughly translated, Nanga Miniature Paintings. As the title would imply, the manuscript is packed to the brim with dozens of ink wash landscape paintings, being miniature copies of various examples from the Southern School of Chinese painting. Despite their size, many have been painted with heavy detailing to the rocky views and branching trees, with some coloring beyond just monochrome shades. The artist who copied these paintings even went as far as to include the original inscriptions, and little mock-ups where the artist seals would be. The last two pages are not landscapes.
Though the author is anonymous, based on such attention and care to detail, it is most likely that they were a student of the Southern School of Chinese painting, and had an opportunity to possibly study originals up close.
One manuscript in quarto (24.6 x 17.2 cm), 78 pages
