Title: Leaf From a Lavishly Illuminated Psalter, In Latin, Northern England, Circa 1260-1270. From the Same Psalter Once Offered by Bruce Ferrini from the Important Illuminated Manuscripts Catalog (2000), no. 14. Illuminated Manuscript on Parchment
Condition: Very Good

A late 13th century leaf from a lavishly illuminated Psalter, produced in Northern England. The text is written in Latin, and is a gothic bookhand, bearing blue and gold initials, and numerous line fillers in red, blue, and gold.

The provenance and localization of this leaf has been made by comparing other Psalters from northern England such as the Evesham, Oscott, York, and Rutland Psalters, all dating to c. 1250-c. 1270.2.

After careful study and comparison, it can be concluded that this leaf bears the provenance of coming from a parent manuscript once owned by Bruce Ferrini, initially offered for sale in the Important Illuminated Manuscripts (2000), no. 14, at $1,000,000 USD. As the manuscript went unsold, Ferrini (also mockingly nicknamed Scissorhands by colleagues) began to cut up the manuscript, selling individual leaves, with many leaves in a private collection by 2002, and eventually spent the past few years of his life cutting individual leaves and selling them line by line.

Later, four leaves from the same manuscript were offered as Lot 31 at The Roger Martin Collection of Western Manuscripts and Miniatures and other properties in 2021, from Drewatts.

This leaf bears the same dimensions as those offered in 2021, with the same style of illumination, same bookhand script, and even the exact same ruling.

One illuminated manuscript on parchment, 23 x 16.5 cm

This manuscript is in very good shape, with very light staining to the margins.
