Title: Kyōka Eiri Hyakunin Isshu (The Kyoka Illustrated Hyakunin Isshu). Circa 1770-1800. A Manuscript Edition of this Comical Twist on the Classical Poetry Anthology, With 43 Pages of Hand Colored Illustrations
Author: Preface by Tachibana no Misae
Condition: Very Good
A Mid to Edo Period, 18th century manuscript edition of the Kyōka Eiri Hyakunin Isshu, also known as the Kyoka Illustrated Hyakunin Isshu, which can be interpreted as One Hundred Humorous Poems by One Hundred Poets. The manuscript is a satirical interpretation of Fujiwara no Teika’s Hyakunin Isshu, the early imperially commissioned anthology of waka poetry.
This manuscript has 43 pages of beautifully hand-colored illustrations, 40 pages of which are different poets, and one being a landscape view.
There is an inscription, indicating the preface is by Tachibana no Misae (? - 1804), a kyōka poet from the mid-Edo period.
At the very end is a colophon, entitled Nihon Sankyō Sanjurokkasen, or Thirty-Six Poets on Three Sceneries of Japan. This could possibly be interpreted as an alternative title to the manuscript, which would make more sense as this work does not contain 100 poems and poets.
One manuscript in quarto (25.8 x 18.3 cm), 25 leaves
This manuscript is in very good shape, with some browning and staining throughout.
