Title: Konpira Sankei Meisho Zue (Famous Places of the Konpira Pilgrimage), 1844. Over 200 Woodblock Illustrations
Author: Akatsuki no Kanenari; Illustrated by Urakawa Kosa
Publisher: Unknown
Condition: Good to Fair
A Late Edo Period, mid 19th Century edition of Akatsuki no Kanenari’s Konpira sankei meisho zue, also known as Famous Places of the Konpira Pilgrimage.
This work is beautifully illustrated, with numerous landscapes, townscapes, and other views, as well as regular scenes of life and battles scenes as well.
Urakawa Kōsa was a Japanese artist active during the Edo period, specifically from the 1830s to the 1860s. He was known for his work in woodblock printing, particularly in illustrated books and surimono.
There are 221 woodblock illustrations throughout, most of them being full page examples, with some being double page examples.
Six volumes in quarto (25.5 x 18 cm), 48, 37, 47, 44, 37, 38 leaves
These volumes are in good to fair shape, with rubbing, wear, and minor staining to the bindings. There is light, scattered staining throughout. The last volume was trounced by my very irate dog, so part of the rear cover is lacking, as is the lower corner of the last eight leaves, affecting text, and three woodblock illustrations.
