Title: Jinshin Kagan, 1872. A Collection of Three Manuscript Sketchbooks of Paintings by Literati Students of the Nanga or Southern Schools, with Additional Watercolor and Other Examples
Author: Keioomu Yoshitaka, Shimetsuke Sano, Tounmi Yaoi, Katsura Yaoi, Various.
Condition: Very Good
A trio of Meiji Period, late 19th century manuscripts entitled Jinshin Kagan, being a series of manuscript sketchbooks. These are packed to the brim with dozens of ink wash landscape and some watercolor paintings, as well as at least one Yamato-e painting, with the landscapes being miniature copies of various examples from the Southern School of Chinese painting, as well as the Nanga School. Despite their size, many have been painted with heavy detailing to the rocky views and branching trees, with a fair amount of coloring beyond just monochrome shades. The artists who copied these paintings even went as far as to include the original inscriptions, and little mock-ups where artist seals would be.
There are several artist inscriptions, including the names of Keioomu Yoshitaka, Shimetsuke Sano, Tounmi Yaoi, and others. Most likely that they were all students of the Nanga or Southern Schools and had opportunities to study the originals at some point. As to why their work has been compiled as such, it may have possibly been at commission request, or some other, unknown reason.
Altogether there are 149 pages of various paintings, many being larger double page examples.
One of the manuscripts bears a dated inscription for the fifth year of the Meiji Era.
Three manuscripts in oblong octavo (19 x 13 cm), 44, 18, 26 leaves
These manuscripts are in very good shape, with minor rubbing and wear to the covers. There is very slight, scattered staining here and there.
