Title: Ikoku Ochiba Kago (Fallen Leaves from a Foreign Country), 1854. First and Only Edition of the Rarest Illustrated Account on Commodore Perry and the Arrival of the Black Ships to Japan
Author: Miki Kosai (Utagawa Yoshimori)
Publisher: Tōkyō, Ingakudō
Condition: Good

A mid 19th century first and only edition of Yoshimori’s Ikoku Ochiba Kago, also known as Fallen Leaves from a Foreign Country. Published only a year after Commodore Perry’s first expedition to Japan and his arrival at Uraga, this work serves as a contemporary account to the initial actions which would lead to the eventual opening of Japan, albeit actions which included a show of military force.

There are two double-page woodblock maps, eight double-page woodblock illustrations, and a single full-page woodblock illustration, all in bright colors.

The following scenes are depicted in colorful detail:

A comprehensive map of Edo Bay and all listed defence installations; a list of presents exchanged between Japan and the U.S., such as a steam locomotive, plants, a parrot, and more; a color map of North America; Several portraits of Commodore Peery, his son, Commander Adams, one "NCO Howsle”; various depictions of US Marines and officers, as well as various American arms, uniforms, and band instruments; the steam frigate USS Mississippi.

The work ends with a Japanese transcription of Perry’s message to Emperor Komei.

One volume in small octavo (18.2 x 11.7 cm), 40 pages

This volume is in good shape with wear and staining to the binding. There is worming to the upper side of the pages, affecting some text and imagery. The lower corners are heavily worn and have scattered soiling.
