Title: Fugaku Hyakkei (One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji), 1912. An Early Edition of One of Hokusai’s Most Famed Works, with Over 100 Beautiful Woodblock Illustrated Views
Author: Katsushika Hokusai
Publisher: Kyoto, Naozaburo Yamada
Condition: Very Good

A Late Meiji Period, early 20th century edition of Katsushika Hokusai’s famed Fugaku Hyakkei, also known as One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji.

A series of three illustrated books, the work is considered one of Japan's most exceptional illustrated works, and alongside the Hokusai Manga, the most influential in the Western world. The first two volumes were published in 1834 and 1835, with a third released in the 1840s.

There are over one hundred beautifully detailed woodblock illustration views of Mount Fuji in various styles and settings. Hokusai shows the peak in pure landscapes, with flora and fauna, in religious and mythological scenes and with different atmospheric effects, but above all, he focuses on ordinary people at work.

This edition has been printed in Meiji 45, or 1912.

Three volumes in quarto (24.2 x 16 cm), 26, 26, 26 leaves

These volumes are in very good shape, with some rubbing and wear to the bindings. One of the cords to volume two is loosened. There is very light, scattered soiling throughout. The very bottom of volumes two and three have some old rodent gnawing, not impacting the illustrations or borders.
