Title: Della Republica et Magistrati di Venetia Libri V, 1591
Author: Gasparo Contarini; Donato Giannotti; Sebastiano Erizzo; Bartolomeo Cavalcanti; Charles Edward Doble
Publisher: In Venetia, Presso Aldo
Condition: Very Good

A late 16th century Aldine edition of Contarini’s collection of texts on the government of Venice. Though Della Republica is the most prominent on the title page, a closer look reveals that Contarini’s account only comprises a quarter of the volume. Organized in five chapters, it extensively characterizes all the components of the Venetian state. The first book talks about the unsurpassed harmony of the monarchic, aristocratic and democratic models that coexist perfectly in the Venetian political constitution. The second chapter tackles the figure of the Duke, also called Doge or Prince, and stresses his modest and humble personality. The third chapter deals with the structure and role of the senate and magistrate. The fourth describes the equity of the Collegio of citizens that have a say in the Venetian state, and lastly, the fifth, talks about the Collegio di Seniori, formed by Venetian and terra ferma citizens altogether. The other writers are Donatto Gianotti, Sebastian Erizzo and Bartolomeo Cavalcanto.

One vellum bound volume in octavo, 384 pages

This volume is in very good shape, with some rubbing and wear to the binding, and some worming to the hinges. There is very little foxing or staining throughout.
