Title: Coutumes d'Anjou et du Maine, 1486. Extremely Scarce and Exceedingly Rare on the Market, Only 7 Copies Recorded on ISTC, at least 2 Imperfect
Publisher: Paris, Pierre Levet, for Jean Alexandre, 12 May 1486
Condition: Good
An extremely scarce and exceedingly rare second edition of Coutumes d'Anjou et du Maine, being the civil and common laws customary to the Anjou and Maine regions of France and being one of the earliest compilations of regional French customary laws. This edition was printed for Jean Alexandre, bookseller to the university at Angers.
There is some rubrication throughout in red ink.
Auction records are extraordinarily scarce, with RareBookHub only recording two copies ever sold. One in 1997, for 13000 USD at Christie’s, the other in 2003, for 45000 USD, the latter being acquired by George Washington University.
Leaves a1, t8, and 5 other leaves are lacking. The title page has been provided in a 19th century manuscript facsimile.
ISTC records only seven copies of this edition in libraries, two copies of which are also incomplete. George Washington University states that their copy, is the only complete copy held in US institutions (there being three copies in the US). If this is correct, then only three copies of seven are complete.
One volume in 12mo, 145 of 152 leaves
This volume is in good shape, with rubbing and wear to the binding, and the front hinges split at the ends. There are several repairs to the margins, with minor letter loss to one corner of a leaf. There is some staining throughout.
