A mid 16th century Aldine edition of Pliny’s Natural History. The largest single work to have survived from the Roman Empire to the modern day, the Natural History compiles information gleaned from other ancient authors.
The work is divided into 37 books, organized into 10 volumes. These cover topics including astronomy, mathematics, geography, ethnography, anthropology, human physiology, zoology, botany, agriculture, horticulture, pharmacology, mining, mineralogy, sculpture, art, and precious stones.
This is the first of four volumes, containing the first 12 books.
This particular copy has been annotated throughout, with underlining all throughout the volume, and neatly written marginalia scattered throughout.
One half vellum bound in octavo, (48)+314 [ie 308] leaves
This volume is in very good shape, with minimal rubbing and wear to the binding. There is a bit of worming to the last leaf, not affecting text. There is minor, scattered, staining throughout.
