Title: Bifolio Leaf Fragment from a Missal, 15th Century. Latin Manuscript on Vellum. Recovered from a Bookbinding, Potentially Toxic Arsenical Paints. 6 Lines of Gothic Script
Condition: Very Good

A 15th century bifolio leaf fragment taken from a Missal, written in Latin, and in a gothic script. There are 1-line initials in red and blue, and a larger 2-line initial.

This manuscript was once used as binder’s waste, likely used for a book’s cover, and coated in green paints to one side. Early green pigments found on similar bindings at the University Library of Southern Denmark and the Smithsonian Libraries have been found to be colored with a combination of indigo and orpiment, a yellow pigment derived from naturally occurring arsenic sulfide toxic. Care should be taken when handling these volumes, either using nitrile gloves, or washing one’s hands after handling.

This manuscript fragment is written in a 6 line format.

One manuscript on parchment, 7.7 x 37 cm

This manuscript is in very good shape, with some rubbing and wear to the vellum exposed to the elements.
