Title: Bifolio Leaf Fragment from A Latin Missal, Germany, Circa 1175-1200. Latin Manuscript on parchment, Used as Binder’s Waste. 14 Lines of Carolingian-Gothic (Proto-Gothic) Script
Condition: Good
A late 12th century bifolio leaf fragment from a manuscript Latin Missal, produced during the second half of the 12th century, likely from Germany. The text is written in Latin and is a Carolingian-Gothic (Proto-Gothic) script written in black ink, bearing the remnants of large initials and red rubrics, with lines of musical notation in brown ink. Though the neumes bear some similarity to several 12th century Cistercian manuscripts seen in the Schoyen Collection, the gothic form of the script can be clearly discerned.
The manuscript itself is a fragment of binder’s waste, saved from a bookbinding, and likely used to reinforce the spine of a volume.
This manuscript fragment is written in a 14-line format, with four columns to each side.
One manuscript fragment on vellum, 32.4 x 12.6 cm
This manuscript is in good shape with rubbing and old staining to the vellum. Some of the text is partially faded in spaces.
