Title: Biblia cum Postillis Nicolai de Lyra et expositionibus Guillelmi Britonis in omnes prologos S. Hieronymi et additionibus Pauli Burgensis replicisque Matthiae Doering, 1487. Volume 2 of 4. With 12th Century Strips of Binder’s Waste
Author: Nicolas de Lyra
Publisher: Nurnberg, Anton Koberger
Condition: Very Good
A late 15th century edition of the 1487 Koberger Bible, being the second of four volumes, and containing the important commentaries of Nicholas de Lyra.
This volume contains the books of the Bible from Ezra to Ecclesiastes.
The volume has been beautifully rubricated throughout in red and blue, with extravagant flourishes, and underlining to each title at the top of the page.
The blank leaf Qd8 is lacking.
This volume has been bound in contemporary pigskin over wooden boards, with later metal clasps fitted. As an addition, the binding has been reinforced internally with large 12th century fragments of binder’s waste, seen as long strips. There is always the possibility that the fragments fully cover the spine of the text block, but this is difficult to confirm without excising the fragments.
One pigskin bound volume in octavo, 369 of 370 leaves
This volume is in very good shape, with some rubbing and wear to the binding, with the lower front hinge partially cracked. The first two leaves have been trimmed at the top, and with worming to the margins. There is a small tear to one leaf. There is some finger staining and scattered soiling throughout, and some damp staining to the upper inner margins.
