Title: An Emakimono Handscroll of a Shinto Ritual Procession, with Dozens of Priests, Soldiers, and a Palanquin, with mention of the Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara, Circa 1750-1850. Manuscript on Paper
Condition: Good

A Mid to Late Edo Period, mid 18th to 19th century emakimono handscroll, depicting some type of Shinto ritual procession, with dozens of priests, soldiers, and a palanquin, all brightly painted with lively, yet simple facial features. The manuscript is sadly incomplete, cutting off abruptly at the end, so it is difficult to ascertain the exact production date of this piece, or who produced it. There is however some mention of the Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara, one of the regions most celebrated shrines, which would make sense.

The paintings have been laid down and bound in a scroll for preservation, with a beautiful brocade decorated cover of an olive hue and swirling flower deisngs, and there are jikusaki (knobs) made of lacquered wood.

One brocade bound emakimono (picture scroll) painting on fine paper, 23.4 x 287.3x cm full length. The knobs are not included as part of the measurements

This handscroll is in good shape, with minimal rubbing or wear to the covers. There is staining and soiling throughout the entirety of the scroll, and as mentioned, it abruptly cuts off at the end, with a later portion clearly lacking.
