Title: Amusement Philosophique sur le Langage des Betes; Bound With; Le Cabinet Jesuitique, 1739/1682. Two Works Rarely Seen Bound Together
Author: G. H. Bougeant; Jean Le Blanc
Publisher: A la Haye,Chez Antoine van Dole
Condition: Good

A mid 18th century edition of Bougeant’s Philosophical Amusement on the Language of Beasts, a satirical text which attacks the Cartesian tenet that animals lack souls are unfit of compassion or love.  While Bougeant does make the argument that animals have souls, they are demonic souls, making them once again unworthy of any such support or love.

Additionally bound is a late 17th century edition of Le Blanc’s Jesuit Cabinet, containing several very curious pieces of the Jesuit Fathers; with a collection of the mysteries of the Roman Church; all increased in this second edition. Though the title page is lacking, the collation matches this, and only this edition and lines up with digital scans.

The title page is lacking to the second work, as is the two page preface.

Two works finely bound into one volume in 12mo, 135+(1), (2)+146 pages

This volume is in good shape, with some rubbing and wear to the binding, and a bit of splitting to the hinges. There is some staining throughout.
