An Early to Late Meiji Period, late 19th century painting album, attributed to the artist Tokumi Yusen, with his signature, and presumed artist seal.
There are 50 pages of beautifully produced ink wash paintings of dragons and other creatures, various figures, landscapes and floral arrangements, and much more. Of these paintings, 24 of them are large, double paged examples.
A Kyoto artist, relatively little is known of Tokumi Yusen’s full portfolio of work, but his given name was Shinzen. He studied under Suzuki Hyakunen, and in 1880, was appointed to the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting as an instructor.
One painting album in orihon format (28.8 x 18.2 cm), 50 leaves
This album is in very good shape, with some wear and old staining to the covers. There is minor soiling and ink staining throughout.
