Title: A Happy Couple Climbing a Cherry Blossom Tree, Circa 1800-1860. A Silk Ukiyo-E Painting Featuring a Bijin-ga from the Late Edo Period, in the Style of Hokusai
Author: After Katsushika Hokusai
Condition: Very Good

A Late Edo Period, 19th century silk ukiyo-e painting of a beautiful lady of Edo Period Japan, wearing a green kimono and with Kanzashi decorating her hair, while a man helps to lift her up into the branches of a cherry blossom tree.

The painting is lovingly rendered in detail with particular focus to the garments of both figures, as well as their facial expressions, and the cherry blossom branches are beautifully depicted in full bloom.

This painting has a stated attribution to the famed Ukiyo-e artist and painter, Katsushika Hokusai, with his seal and signature. Though it falls short of a true work by Hokusai, the artist who produced this Bijin-ga painting certainly did do their best to emulate his style, notably to the facial structure and expression of the figures.

The painting has been neatly mounted onto a brocade decorated kakejiku (hanging scroll), with jikusaki (knobs). There is a wooden box to accompany it, preserving the scroll.

One silk painting mounted on a kakejiku (hanging scroll), 164 x 48 cm full size, 108 x 37 cm main painting

This painting is in very good shape, with very light staining and soiling to the painting. A few silk seams have split.
