A Muromachi Period, mid 15th century manuscript handscroll of poetical calligraphy, entitled Shijō Dainagon shinsen zui nō uta-gaku-sho, or Shijo Dainagon’s Newly Selected Essence, a Selected Book of Poetry.

As the title entails, the manuscript is a handscroll of poetry, written in dizzying calligraphy against browned paper, which has been beautifully illuminated with golden reeds and flowers here and there. The poetry is that originally by Fujiwara no Kintō (966 – 1041), an exemplary poet and calligrapher of the Heian Period, who has been mentioned in works by mentioned in works by Murasaki Shikibu, Sei Shōnagon, and other texts and historical chronicles.

There is a dated inscription at the end for Bunan 6 in March, or 1449.

The calligraphy has been laid down and bound in a scroll for preservation, with a beautiful brocade decorated cover of flowering designs against gold, and there are jikusaki (knobs) made of lacquered wood.

One brocade bound handscroll of calligraphy backed with illuminations on fine paper, 27 x 216 cm. The knobs are not included as part of the measurement.

This handscroll is in very good shape, with minimal rubbing and wear to the brocade. There are some creases and scattered stain marks, with one or two of them having caused damage, though not causing any text loss.
