An Early to Mid Edo Period, 17th to mid 18th century manuscript album entitled Ogurayama Shikishi, being 30 leaves copied after the Ogura Shikishi, being the original manuscript of the Hykannin Isshu, containing one poem by 100 poets selected by Fujiwara no Teika, and is said to have been pasted on the shoji screens (sliding doors) of his mountain villa on Ogurayama.
One of the classical anthologies of Japanese waka poetry, the work was arranged for Utsunomiya Yoritsuna, the father-in-law of Teika's son Tameie, who was working near Mount Ogura at the time. Teika’s poetical impact and legacy has remained in Japan for centuries onwards, being renowned as one of the nations greatest poets, and dominating the poetry scene with his style and works from the Heian to Meiji Periods.
This example has been attributed by a member of the Shijo Clan, and has been decorated with silver and mostly dulled gold inks, forming hillscapes and accentuating the fine calligraphy, which has been produced in the Teika Style.
One manuscript album of 30 illuminated leaves of calligraphy (24.6 x 22.2 cm album size, 17.9 x 15.4 cm leaf size), 28 leaves
This album is in fair shape, with rubbing and worm tracks to the covers. There is considerable worming throughout, mostly to the borders of the album pages thankfully, but with some worm holes also affecting the calligraphy.
