Title: Kayo Hiso Genko (On Training Horses), Circa 1800-1840. A Manuscript Copy of this Work on Horse Breeding, Training, and Nomenclature, with 34 Expertly Reproduced Full Page Illustrations of Horses
Author: Kyokuzan Hirasawa; Unknown Copyist
Condition: Very Good
A Late Edo Period, 19th century manuscript edition of Kyokuzan Hirasawa’s Kayo Hiso Genko, or, On Training Horses.
Being a copy of the 1789 imprint, this manuscript follows the same exact text, being a work on training horses for breeding, riding, and providing the nomenclature and various colors of different breeds. The original printed woodblock illustrations are based after designs by the Edo Period artist Fuyo-gi Suzuki, which are also copied, and even the original colophon has been copied.
The copyist has done a remarkable job of reproducing the original calligraphic text and placement, as well as the illustrations all by hand. The large eight-character titles have been copied to be as close to the printed text, while the 34 copied pages of illustrations are uncannily close to the printed woodblocks, with even the printed labels copied faithfully. The only drastic different is the lack of hand coloring to most of the illustrations and printed borders, but all 63 horses are present.
The manuscript has been rebound with thick and sturdy boards, helping to protect the original and delicate washi paper covers.
One manuscript in quarto (24.2 x 17 cm), 112 pages
This manuscript is in very good shape, with some wear and old soiling to the binding. There is some soiling to the lower right corner of the pages, and some damp staining more to the first half of the manuscript.
