A large Heian Period, 8th to 12th century sutra fragment, being an unidentified section from one of the many known sutra translations from Sanskrit to Chinese.

This example follows the Heian style of illuminated sutra production, being golden ink inscribed on indigo dyed paper, with illuminated borders for every column of text. The fragment is in fact two sheets of fine mulberry paper or something similar, to add an additional layer to strengthen the manuscript.

This fragment is written in a single column format, with up to 17 characters per column.

One illuminated manuscript on indigo dyed paper, 25.7 x 44.3 cm

This manuscript is in very good shape, with some creasing and fading to the ink in places, the creasing particularly heavier to the left side. There are two pinprick holes to the lower left section.
