Title: Uho Doji, Circa 1603-1750. An Edo Period Painting Depicting a Manifestation of Amaterasu as the Dainichi Nyorai, without a Pagoda Head Adornment
Condition: Very Good

An Early to Mid Edo Period, 17th to 18th century painting of of Uhō Dōji. Also known as the “rainmaking youth,” he is said to be either a manifestation of the Shinto goddess Amaterasu or the Buddha Dainichi Nyorai. Supposedly this is the form that Amaterasu Omikami took when she was born in Hyuga. Most portraits of Uhō Dōji usually depict him with a several tiered pagoda upon his head. But curiously, it is lacking here.

The painting has been neatly mounted onto a brocade decorated kakejiku (hanging scroll), with jikusaki (knobs) made of lacquered wood. There is a wooden box to accompany it, preserving the scroll.

One painting mounted on a kakejiku (hanging scroll), 124 x 36.5 cm cm full size, 44.5 x 23.5 cm main painting

This painting is in very good shape, with some wear and a few creases and cracks to the painting. There is some staining as well, and part of the kakejiku is missing a few pieces of fabric at the top.
