Title: The Holy Bible Containing the Old Testament and the New, 1618(?)/1633. An Early English Bible Ruled in Red, With the First Scottish Edition of the King James New Testament
Author: Church of England
Publisher: Edinburgh, Printed by the printers to the Kings most excellent Majestie [i.e. R. Young]
Condition: Very Good
An early 17th century edition of The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament. Newly translated out of the originall tongues, and with the former diligently compared and revised, by his Maiesties speciall commandement. Appointed to be read in churches.
Also bound in is an Edinburgh edition of the New Testament, being the First Edition of the King James New Testament printed in Scotland.
The title page and preliminary leaves are lacking, beginning immediately with Genesis, headed by a small woodcut of Adam and Eve in Paradise. The woodcut and type face conform to a 1618 edition of the Geneva Bible, and does not appear to show up in later 17th century imprints in such a similar fashion
The Bible itself is textually complete.
This volume most recently belonged to the library collection of Mulberry House, a former rectory of High Ongar church.
This volume has been rebound in full leather, though misdated with the year of 1718. Most likely the binder intended to tool a date of 1618.
One finely bound volume in octavo (17 x 11.3 cm), Aaa-Mmm5
This volume is in very good shape, with some rubbing and wear to the binding, mostly to the board edges and spine. There is some soiling to the first and land handful of leaves, and minor soiling and staining throughout.
