Title: The Devotional Diamond Pocket Bible, Containing The Old Testament and the New; Bound With; The Devotional Diamond Pocket Testament, 1821/1816 (But Actually 1826 for both). With 31 Beautiful Plates of Illustration, and in a Beautiful Contemporary Binding
Author: Commentary by William Gurney; Church of England
Publisher: London, Printed by and for J. Jones, Lambeth
Condition: Very Good
An early 19th century edition of Reverend Gurney’s Devotional Diamond Pocket Bible, with notes and reflections. Although the first title page is lacking, it is easy enough to identify this edition by the advertisements at the end and comparing to existing copies. Incidentally, it should be noted that while the title pages are dated 1821 and 1816, these are likely false dates, as all of the bound in plates have dates from 1824-1826. That, or they were simply bound in at later points, though I have seen other editions of the Diamon Pocket Bible with plates like so.
There are 31 beautiful plates bound in, the first depicting Reverend Gurney, and the rest depicting different scenes from the Bible and life of Christ.
There is an early ownership inscription, dated 1851.
This volume most recently belonged to the library collection of Mulberry House, a former rectory of High Ongar church.
This copy has been finely bound in a contemporary red morocco leather, with gilt tooling and embossed designs, and the title in gilt to the spine as well.
One finely bound volume in 16mo (13.4 x 7.4 cm), A11 of A12-Z12+Aa12-Oo5
This volume is in very good shape, with minor rubbing and wear to the binding, heavier to the hinges. Several gatherings are shaken but holding. There is minor foxing and soiling throughout, heavier to the plates.
