Title: Shunjū Sansui-zu (Spring and Autumn Landscapes), Circa 1800-1868. Two Silk Paintings of Heian Spring and Fall Landscapes
Artist: Arashiyama Takao(?)
Condition: Very Good

A Late Edo Period, early to mid 19th century pair of silk paintings, depicting beautiful Heian Period landscapes of both Spring and Fall. The Fall painting depicts a noble family and their courier, while the Spring painting depicts another group of nobles overlooking a river and individuals boating. There is significant detail to the trees, as well as the vestments of all individuals.

The paintings are both signed, with inscriptions to the box, and artist seals, but the closest translation I can come up with is for one Arashiyama Takao.

The paintings have been neatly mounted onto brocade decorated kakejiku (hanging scrolls), with jikusaki (knobs) made of lacquered wood. There is a wooden box to accompany both paintings, preserving them.

Two silk paintings mounted on kakejikus (hanging scrolls), 184 x 50 cm full size, 107 x 38 cm main paintings

These paintings are in very good shape, with minor worming to the Spring painting.
