A Late Edo Period, mid 19th century edition of Shinran Shōnin Goichidaiki Zue, also known as the Illustrated Account of the Life of Saint Shinran, printed in the 2nd year of the Koka Era.
A Japanese Buddhist monk, he was born in Hino (now a part of Fushimi, Kyoto) near the end of the the Heian Period and lived during the Kamakura Period. Shinran was a pupil of Hōnen and the founder of what ultimately became the Jōdo Shinshū sect of Japanese Buddhism.
There are 94 full page woodblock illustrations throughout, with many double page examples, as well as one depicting a yurei.
Five volumes in quarto (25 x 17.8 cm), 49, 49, 37, 49, 50 leaves
These volumes are in very good shape, with rubbing and wear to the bindings. The first volume has two corner tears, with one to the title page, and one to a text leaf near the end. There is scattered staining and wear throughout.
