Title: Seiryokusansui to aki Kusabana-gun Gan-zu (Blue-Green Landscape with Autumn Flowers and Wild Geese), Circa 1800-1836
Author: Attributed to
Kano Tanshin (Morimichi)
Condition: Very Good

A Late Edo Period, early to mid 19th century pair of silk paintings, depicting two beautiful landscapes in hues of blue and green, with golden mists and clouds in the backgrounds, as well as some wild geese to the pair. The paintings certainly display the style of the Kano School of art, with particular shading techniques and styling to the greenery and the trees, and the use of bright, golden sprays to the background and clouds.

These paintings are attributed to Kano Tanshin (Morimichi) (1785–1835), with his signature and artist seal. The son of Kano Tanboku, he succeeded his father as head of the Kajibashi Kano family. Engaged in the creation of folding screen paintings presented to Korean dignitaries and representatives, as well as other works. In 1825, he became of Hokan, or Buddhist pries, in 1825. He also held the titles of Minister of the Imperial Household, and later Minister of Ceremonies.

The paintings have been neatly mounted onto a kakejiku (hanging scroll), with jikusaki (knobs). There is a wooden box to accompany both paintings, preserving them.

Two silk paintings mounted on kakejikus (hanging scrolls), 193 x 56 cm full size, 108 x 44 cm main paintings

These paintings are in very good shape, with minor wear and rubbing to the protective canvas and covers of the scrolls, with a few old repairs. The edges of the kakejikus have wear and creasing to them, but that main paintings themselves are in very excellent shape, with only a few small scratches to the silk.
