Title: Sacramentary Containing Part of the Holy Mass, First Quarter of the 12th Century. Italian Manuscript on Parchment. Recovered Manuscript Waste Fragment
Condition: Good
An early 12th century leaf fragment from what was once likely a large Latin Sacramentary, produced in the first quarter of the 12th century, in Italy, possibly Rome. The sacramentary fragment comes from a part of the Holy Mass, with the rough transcription of the first bolded portion being "Remotis obumbrationibus carnalium victimarum, spiritalem tibi, sum pater, hostiam supplici servitute deferimus, quae miro ineffabitique mysterio et immolatur semper, et eadem semper offertur". Translated, "Raised from the shadow of carnal sacrifices, we bring to you, O Most High Father, a spiritual sacrifice of consummated servitude, always offered in a wonderful and ineffable mystery and always offered in the same way".
The manuscript is written in a Gothic rotunda script and in a two-column format, in black ink, and bearing five large red letters.
The manuscript itself is an example of a recovered waste fragment, once used as a pastedown
This manuscript is written in a 2 column and 31-line format.
This manuscript bears the provenance of having been acquired by Maggs Brothers in 1993, and later ending up in the ownership of Marvin L. Colker, later sold in the London collection at Christies.
One manuscript on parchment, 32.5 x 25.5 cm
This manuscript is good shape, with heavier staining to the edges and browning, with some blackening and traces of glue. The right column has overlapped and been reattached at some point. As a recovered manuscript waste fragment once used as a pastedown, the text on the verso is largely rubbed off.
