A Meiji Period, late 19th century edition of Ōshū shōsetsu Tetsu Retsu kafuku Tan maki nana, or A European Novel: The Tale of the Vicissitudes of Telemaque. A Japanese translation of Fénelon’s classical text, the work has been presented to a new Japanese audience, complimented with woodblock illustrations by Sensai Eitaku. These are the first and fifth volumes of eight, with 10 full-page illustrations depicting scenes of Ancient Greece, and produced in a more Eurocentric style.
Two volumes in octavo (19.1 x 12.8 cm), 21, 18 leaves
These volumes are in very good shape, with minor wear and old staining to the covers. There is minor rodent gnawing to the upper right corner of the fifth volume, and some scattered soiling and foxing throughout both volumes.
