Title: Leaf From an Illuminated Book of Hours, France (Burgundy?), Circa 1475. Illuminated Manuscript on Vellum. De Profundis from the Office of the Dead, and Psalms 132-133. Two Lavishly Illuminated Borders
Condition: Very Good
A manuscript leaf from a mid 14th century illuminated Book of Hours, produced in France, possibly Burgundy.
The leaf in written in Latin, and in brown ink using a letter batarde script, with rubrics in blue, a characteristic which possibly points to Burgundian or Artois origin, echoing the palette and style of a slightly later manuscript held at the New York Public Library (MS 2557, from Artois).
There are several two-line initials against red and blue backgrounds, countless one-line initials, illuminated line-fillers and two lavishly illuminated three-sides borders, including acanthus leaves, roses, thistles, and morning glories
The leaf opens the Office of the Dead (De profundis), and the verso continues with Psalms 132 and 133.
This manuscript is written in a 26-line format.
One illuminated manuscript on vellum, 19 x 11.5 cm
This manuscript is in very good shape, with minor rippling to the vellum.
