Title: Hao li da Daoju (Great Gift Items), and Another Scroll, 1790. Two Manuscript Scrolls on Wedding Etiquette, with 14 Hand Drawn Illustrations of Gifts and Furniture, Including Lacquerware Boxes
Author: Various Ogasawara School Members
Condition: Very Good
A Late Edo Period, late 18th century pair of manuscript handscrolls, with one roughly entitled Hao li da Daoju, or Great Gift Items. The other title I cannot clearly make out, but both manuscripts appear to be on proper wedding etiquette, with instructions on customs for both samurai and courts, illustrations on ideal gifts, different arrangements and more. The manuscripts have been signed by members of the Ogasawara School of Etiquette, first founded in the Kamakura Period.
There are 13 hand painted illustrations, as well as one uncolored sketch of various gifts and furniture, including lacquerware boxes, decorative displays and screen doors, and more.
The manuscript is dated Kansei 2, or 1790.
Both scrolls have been hand painted blue, with reeds decorating the paper.
Two manuscripts in handscroll format on fine paper, 18.2 x 184 cm, 18.2 x 302 cm
These manuscripts are in very good shape, with minor rubbing and wear to the decorated covers. There is some soiling and staining at the start and end, and minor wormtracks to parts of the upper margins of both scrolls.
