A Late Edo Period, 19th century manuscript on fish, lovingly illustrated, and appearing to be either some type of encyclopaedia, or fishing guide. With the main writing in kanji and secondary titles of some fish in Japanese hiragana, the text appears to be a Japanese copy of an earlier Chinese manuscript or printed text, but I have not identified which work.
From different sub-species of sea breams such as the Gilt-head bream, Flatfish, and even examples of the genus Lepidotrigla, numerous types of fish are listed and described, with descriptors on where the fish may be located, what kind of scales and value it has, what the fish may smell like, whether it is non-toxic or not, the colors, even medical benefits and whether it may reinvigorate one’s Qi (the vital force of a living entity). There are even descriptions for fish which are used as ceremonial offerings in weddings and the first day of the Lunar New Year.
Take for example the following, roughly transcribed entry on the Threadfin Snapper:
“The Threadfin Snapper is similar in shape to the bream. The scales of the fish are aquatic red, with yellow-green stripes from head to tail. Hence, the name is cute(?). The Smell is sweet and mild. The fish is non-toxic. Invigorates Qi, promotes urination, and regulates the stomach.
Accompanying the main text is 86 illustrations in greyscale colors, representing many of the listed fish, all varying types and sizes.
One manuscript in folio (26.1 x 18.8 cm), 69 pages
This manuscript is in very good shape, with minor wear and rubbing to the binding. There is minor worming and staining scattered throughout, though the worming is less prevalent, and has been repaired in places.
