Condition: Very Good
A Late Edo Period, early to mid 19th century pair of emakimono handscrolls, being a rather interesting manuscript edition containing ink underdrawings largely derived from one of Katsushika Hokusai’s erotic shunga work, Ehon Tsuhi no Hinagata, or the Picture-book Models of Couples, as well as a few independent illustrations from other works.
There are eleven large drawings to the first scroll, and thirteen to the second scroll, all of various erotic scenes, including several scenes of wakashu in women’s attire. Some of the drawings to the first scroll have ink annotations in red.
The drawings have been laid down and bound in two scrolls for preservation, with beautiful, decorated covers, and there are jikusaki (knobs).
Two decorated emakimono (picture scrolls) on paper, 29.5 x 478 and 29.5 x 549 cm full length
These hand scrolls are in very good shape, with minimal wear or rubbing to the covers. The first scroll has soiling and staining throughout, the staining to the upper half of the paper, and there are a few tiny tears to the margins and several repaired worm tracks. The second scroll has foxing and soiling throughout.
