A rather high quality, mid 20th century, woodblock printed facsimile of the E Inga Kyo, also known as the Illustrated Sutra of Cause and Effect. A biography on the life and training of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, the work follows the Buddha from his youth as Prince Siddhartha, to his encounters on his journeys, and the eventual path to enlightenment he would follow.

This is a wonderful facsimile of the original Nara Period, 8th century scroll held at the University Museum within the Tokyo National University of Fine arts and Music. The scroll itself is only the second and final part of the fourth volume, as the rest of the volumes from that set are presumed lost.

Everything, from the hand coloring to even the staining incurred to the preserved scroll, has been faithfully reproduced in this facsimile. There are various scenes of Shakyamuni alongside his disciples, and beautiful landscapes and backgrounds to add to the imagery.

The paintings have been laid down and bound in a scroll for preservation, with a beautiful brocade decorated cover, and there are jikusaki (knobs) made of lacquered wood. The handscroll is enclosed in a wooden box.

One brocade bound printed emakimono (picture scroll) on paper, roughly 29 x 1130 cm

This emakimono is in very good shape, with minimal rubbing and wear to the decorated cover. The scroll has been produced to imitate all of the original staining, but there does appear to be some actual spotting and minor soiling to the upper and lower margins at times. Some of the divisional sections of leaves have split here and there.
