Title: Consiliorum Medicinalium Libri II, 1635. The First of Two Volumes from de Baillou’s Medical Works, on Diseases, Hippocrates, Calculus, and More. The Founder of Modern Epidemiology
Author: Guillaume de Baillou; Jacques Thevart
Publisher: Parisiis, Apud Jacobum Quesnel
Condition: Very Good

A mid 17th century edition of de Baillo’s Medicinal Advice, being his total collected medical works.

This is the first of two volumes, in which are contained many things which will pertain both to the knowledge of diseases, and to the treatment of them by means of examples, and to the understanding of obscure passages of Hippocrates. Among other things, the most elegant and useful is the little work on calculus.

A physician born of the Baillou family, one of the oldest aristocratic families in Europe, de Baillou is considered to be the first epidemiologist since Hippocrates and is credited as the founder of modern epidemiology. He did extensive studies of epidemics that plagued Paris and is credited with providing the first clinical description of pertussis (whooping cough) in 1578. He also provided the first modern descriptions of rheumatism and arthritis.

For some reason a prior owner has extracted the printer device from the title page, in a horizontal strip.

One vellum bound volume in quarto, 34+572+(20) pages

This volume is in very good shape, with minor wear and old staining to the binding. There is some foxing and soiling throughout, heaviest to the fore-edge.
