Title: Sanjurokkasen (The Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry), 1705. A Calligraphy Album of Poetry on Thirty-Six Beautifully Painted and Illuminated Shikishi Format Leaves, by Various Nobles
Author: Attributed to Konoe Motohiro; Takatsukasa Kanehiro; Many Other Authors; Poetry Originally Compiled by Fujiwara no Kinto
Condition: Very Good

A Mid Edo Period, early 18th century calligraphy album of the Sanjurokkasen, also more famously known as the Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry, in thirty-six painted sheets of calligraphy.

Selected by Fujiwara no Kintō of the Heian Period, they are a group of Japanese poets of the Asuka, Nara, and Heian Periods as exemplars of Japanese poetic ability.

Since that, various editions of the Sanjurokkasen have been produced, from the Thirty-Six Female Immortals of Poetry, the New Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry, and even the Late Classical Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry, each with a unique selection of poets.

Each poem for their respective poet is produced on beautifully decorated shikishi leaves, of which have been beautifully painted with gold spray, clouds, blue skies, and golden flowers, brightly enhancing the calligraphy.

The album is dated to Hoei 2, or 1705. Each leaf of calligraphy has been produced by a different noble of the Japanese courts, and there is a complete list of participating nobles enclosed. Two of the attributed authors include:

Motohiro Konoe (1648-1722), who was a nobleman in the early and mid-Edo period. He played a central role in the Imperial Court during the reigns of Emperor Higashiyama and Emperor Nakamikado and made efforts to improve relations with the Edo Shogunate. He was a head of the Konoe family, the head of the five regent families, and a third-generation male descendant of Emperor Goyozei.

Kanehiro Takatsukasa (1659-1725) was nobleman in the early and mid-Edo period, serving as the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of the Right, and the Minister of the Left before becoming the Kampaku, or Imperial Regent. He was skilled in waka poetry, calligraphy, and painting.

There is a wooden box to accompany the album, preserving the contents.

Each of the leaves have been laid down and bound in a cloth album, and there is a wooden box to accompany the album.

One wrap bound album in orihon format (27.1 x 22 full size, 18 x 16 cm leaf size), 36 illuminated leaves of calligraphy

This manuscript album is in very good shape, with some wear to the wraps. There is very little soiling or staining of any kind to the leaves.
