Author: Georges Guillet de Saint-George; Muḥammad IV Sultan der Turkei
Publisher: A Paris, chez Estienne Michallet
Condition: Good
A late 17th century edition of de Guillet’s account of Ancient and New Athens, and the Present Estate of the Empire of the Turks, Containing the Life of Sultan Mahomet IV, the Ministry of Coprogli Achmet Pasha, Grand Vizier, what happened in the Camp of the Turks at the Siege of Candia, and several other particularities of the Porte Affaires. This is an early account on Athens and Greece under Ottoman rule, claiming to be based on personal knowledge by Guillet that his brother had visited Athens and sent him letters. However, the information was supplied first-hand by Giraud, the French consul in Athens at the time, while the plan of Athens was provided by Capuchin monks who settled within the city.
There is an engraved folding plate of a Greek amphitheatre, and the commonly lacking map of Athens is of course, lacking.
Collation and comparison to digital copies indicate that this is the 1676 copy, and not the 1675 imprint as there are different head and tail pieces being utilized, and slight font variations.
One finely bound volume in 12mo, (22)+456+(34) pages
On note of condition, this volume is in good shape, with rubbing and wear to the binding, and some cracking to the hinges. There is some foxing and damp staining throughout. The title page is lacking.
