Title: An Emakimono Handscroll of Coastal Landscapes, Mountains and Bays, Circa 1800-1846. Beautifully Painted in the Southern School Style, and Presented to a Prolific Landscape Artist of the Mid to Late Edo Period
Author: Attributed to Tenko
Condition: Very Good
A Late Edo Period emakimono handscroll, displaying a long and beautifully painted landscape, showing various coastal settlements and landmarks, and craggy mountains and bays, all produced in the Chinese Southern School style of painting. Several figures can also be seen, including a few on boats.
While the artist, last name Tenka, is not one that comes up as a well-known artist, the inscription does mention that this landscape scroll was presented to the Edo Period artist Uragami Shunkin (1779-1846), which would date this piece no later than 1846.
The paintings have been laid down and bound in a scroll for preservation, and there are jikusaki (knobs) made of lacquered wood.
One emakimono (picture scroll) on fine paper, 28.5 x 365 cm. The knobs are not included as part of the measurement.
This emakimono is in very good shape, with minimal wear or rubbing to the scroll. There are a few minor creases and a bit of paint scraping, and two small tears, and very light, scattered staining.
